If we are going to look for similarities, we can find some not only from Star Wars, but from Lord of the Rings, Dragonriders of Pern and King Arthur. If I am not mistaken, I read somewhere that these were his companions while growing up. And seeing that he wrote the first book at 15, there are bound to be similarities or elements from these other authors.
