Eldest: Hidden message in the Title?
As we all know, Morzan fathered two sons. In that case, what Murtagh should have said was his elder son when revealing to Eragon his parentage. Eldest indicates there is a third child. Same with the title. So, either Eragon has an older or younger sibling, as Murtagh doesn't know about this alleged third child, so we cannot say for sure that Eragon is the youngest.
Old-> Elder-> Eldest

It doesn't , but grammatically, it implies a third child.

But WHERE does it hint that x.x the thought of there being a 3rd never crossed my mind. Unless it's possibly Roran... which I kinda doubt.

When I see the word elder I think of old men. So I don't know. Maybe what he should have said was "oldest son" or "first born" or something like that. But I still think that Brom is Eragons father.

eld·est [éldəst]
adjective
born first: first, either in age or seniority
I got this off Encarta Dictionary. So yeah Eldest only means older.

Well CP said there is a hidden meaning to 'Eldest' that will be revealed in Book 3. So we'll see. Maybe like... the green dragon is Saphira's brother that hasn't been born o.o?
Probably not though, just a spontaneous thought.

CP said that there is more meaning to 'Eldest' then Murtagh being Eragons older brother. He said that the other meanings in the title will be revealed in the third book. ^^ That's all.

you also noted, princess elayna, that the green dragon may be saphira's older brother. That's a definate possibility, but it would make mating with each other kind of..... awkward

Doesn't it say in Eldest that Saphira's mother only gave the riders one egg? I'm going to look it up right now and come back and edit this.
I found it and I have come back to edit just like i said I would. It says "One thing he did glean, and that Saphira treasured, was the name of her sire, Iormungr, and her dam, Vervada, which meant Stormcleaver in the old speech. While Iormungr had been bound to a Rider, Vervada was a wild dragon who had laid many eggs but entrusted only one to the Riders: Saphira. Both dragons perished in the Fall." Pg. 393 So Saphira and the green dragon can't be related.

Galbatorix may have caputured one of those many eggs, and put a spell on it so it would make the person who touched it a rider. We know he's probably capable of this, as we know what he did to Shruikan....... kind of far-fetched though LOL

I think the family member is Brom who is eragon's father and so that is really what Eldest means.

Currently eldest meansd morzan and murty, but CP has said that there is a bigger meaning to what eldest means which will be said in Book III. I think brom will be what eldest means.
Anyway, I respect your opinion.

Re: Eldest: Hidden message in the Title?
oh gosh... i posted a thread of this somewhere... i didnt realize that there was one already.
well yeah, thats one of my theories.... three brothers... but im not so sure selena did have three kids.
i mean, the dwarves adopted eragon.... so that makes orik a brother to eragon. so murtagh could be the eldest, and orik the elder...
i dunno, just some theory i had... i think it would be too much if we added a new important character.
