i think he'll go good again, he had to SWEAR in the ancient langage, or Galbatorix would have crushed Thorn and Murtagh, both are good, just forced into evil deeds

maybe he can go all samurai and commit suicide lol but i dont want him to die...i want him to "help" galbotorix EXCEPT instead of hurting eragon,he screws up and accidently gets killed or makes galbotorix die

I agree in most with AnnieBee. He had a choice and he chose to be with Galbatorix. I can't bring myself to say that defying Galbatorix is the good of the many though. You have to remember what Orromis said while training Eragon. It's for the good of the deserving, but I wont agree to many.

well maybe(i know this post is from LONG ago)he was lying to eragon about siding with galbie and only killed hrothgar beacause he locked him up(lol idk)

Murtagh is evil. He knows what serving Galby as a Dragonrider means to the Varden. Eragon told him he would kill Murtagh to release him from the spell. Murtagh laughed and said that life was too sweet to let go. He refused to sacrfice himself for greater good.

I picked A. I think it's sort of that "Grinch who stole Christmas" thing; that way deep down he still does have some good left in him. True, the best decision, for the good of many, would have been to die but I doubt many of us in a choice between an evil life or an honorable death would have picked death. It was probably an impulsive decision in which he never weighed the consequences. He is probably, deep down, hoping for a way to break the oath.

yes, i agree with the above post. anyway, if you were faced with the same situation murtagh was in, would you pick death or serve evil?

I think I would serve evil, that sounds like fun anyway. And I agree but the Grinch Stole Christmas thing is sorta lame in my opionion, but I see where you're coming from. Murtagh I think chose evil because he was afraid of dieing, he wanted to live and so the only thing he could do was pick joining Galbatorix. I still like Murtagh in my opinion and hope that he returns to the side of good.

Murtagh isn't really evil, he just serves his own good. He is, obviously, afraid of death, and afraid of Gally. Because of tihs, he effectively left himself open - even without gally knowing his true name - for control. I think that he will come back at the end. I think it'll either be that Murtagh gives up something crucial, maybe even himself, for Eragon, or Eragon will learn sometihng, from the vault of sould, or from the elves, that will be able to free murtagh, and given the chance, I think murtagh would come back only if it appeared that Gally will lose. But as we've seen, Murtagh is unpredictable..

This is really stupid, but what if whatever is under the Menoa tree is something that will release Murtagh, who could, as a rider, be considered a weapon?

I guess Murtagh could be considered a weapon but not Eragon's weapon, he would be, you could say, the Varden's weapon.

The prophecy just said when Eragon needed a weapon.

Murtagh doesn't care about his family name. He has stated that people will never trust him because of his father's deeds. Murtagh only cares about his own skin, right now he thinks Galby has a better chance of winning the war.

and then murtagh said:no eragon, you cannot help me know, no one can, except 4 galby........
so that implies that he want to go back (i think)

i think eragon will have to fight murtag because murtag made a promise to be loyal to galbatorix (and he said he can not break it) so maby he will kill murtag or he will kill galbatorix first so murtag will be free of his promise....

i think murthagh is good but is blinded by the power...and he can not be free of galbatorix until he or galbatorix dies cause he(galbatorix) nows his real name so he is *BIP*....

i dont think distance would help. like eragon cast the curse on elva, and he was miles away and she was still fully under it!

yeah i love murtagh too. im so in love with him. he's one of the best fictional characters ever.

Murtagh is not evil! He was captured put under spells, and who he is is known for crying out loud! He is helpless. He doesnt like Galbtorix just the empire system. He was never evil in the first place. He refused to kill Eragon after all. And you may point out that he didnt commit suicide, but would Eragon if he were in Murtaghs position? Sacrifice Saphira? Would You? I wouldnt.

yeah i hope nobody thinks of murtagh as evil and a coward, because he is kind, and very brave. people tend to overlook the fact that he took care of eragon and saw to it that he reached the varden well. he even fought for the varden, and wanted to avenge ajihad. that was the reason why he was captured in the first place. if he didnt try to avenge ajihad, he wouldnt have been captured.

I still think Eragon could have taken him if he wasnt tired. But hey who cares. I dont see how anyone could think Murtagh evil. Its ... Its ... its inconceivable.
