Right you are! I went to the book and Murtagh specifically states that he learned ways to manipulate energy not elements.
I LOVE YOUR DRAGON!!!! (It's so sweet! I'vee been meaning to tell you and I keep on forgetting. Just like Fathskie's butterfly, I love it! I tried to get my screen name all sparklely like Firtongue and I ended up lossing my eggs! That's how proficient I am with the computer thingys.)

 well,
well, we know he can't have been drawing power from the elements, that wouldn't have been to hard for Ormis to tell Eragon.
You know how when a dragon's power touches them, their strenght is amazingly powerful? well, maby galby learned how to axcess that power and use it. It wouldn't tire the dragons for like what happened with Brom's grave, Saphira wasn't tired at all after she did that, or at least she didn't seem to be.

Hey, we havent thought about Oromis' secret. Maybe when hes became king he put a spell on Oromis before he got away so that he slowly drains his power.

That might be true, but Oromis can't power all of his spells. I don't thjink galby even knows Oromis is alive.

i had another thought while washing up, all elements give off an energy of some kind for example fire gives off heat energy, wind kinetic energy, you get the principle, mayb that could b how Galby and Murtagh gain extra power while fighting, you have all agreed that Murtagh manipulates energy in ways that Eragon could never imagine, well this fits into your principle, if you understand me??? do u understand me???

 That is probly not true.
You do that while in Ellesmera, Eragon and Oromis were talking in the acient languange, meaning that they can't lye. Well, Oromis told Eragon something like, "... Ahh, Eragon if we could absorb enery from light and fire, we could crush galboritrux, but no one has found a spell that would allow it..." This means that that isn't how he is getting power. I think my last thorey I posted is actually how galboritrux gets energy.

sorry about the double posting thing,
like u just sed, Oromis spoke in the Ancient Language and could not lie. He did not however say that there wasnt a spell that could allow the user to absorb elemental energy, it does say that they would cruch Galby if they ever found a spell that could do that, so what i m trying to say, that you don't seem to be understanding is, that if Galby found a spell that would allow him to absorb elemental energy and the elves did not know about it, then.......... thats what i have been trying to say,. i m not trying to prove anyone wrong or, make my idea sound best, i jus want someone to understand what i m getting at!!!

But it says that Oromis knows how glaby is getting energy! Oromis says, "... That is for another time Eragon." He said that while watching a flock of birds I remember that, so he can't be drawing energy from the elements.

Just about the little Murtagh thing, he can do that only because he knows his true name. So does Galby.

it could be something that should stay secret because if an elf or another human decided to become powerful and they knew how galby was getting powerful because Oromis told everyone, that would be really bad. To many people with too much power. It could devistate the world like what happened before the acienct langange came into play.

When a person knows a true name of anyone, they can control that person. Since Murtagh knows his true name, he has complete and total control over himself.

The reason why he and Galbatorix have become so powerful is that they are drawing from
the Vault of Souls in Helgrind.

I can't remember if it was the series, but in a series, a mentor to the hero says that one of the villian's greatest power is his image of invincibility. But then again Oromis, a wise dragonrider and mentor knows how Galbatorix is getting stronger, so he must be.

" who the hell" Not a very nice or proper way to express yourself towards my or any other posters' opinions or speculations. On this site we play nice! Maybe you should review the Forum Rules.
Actually, NO ONE has said " said the vault of souls was in Helgrind". This was just PURE speculation on my behalf and a very twisted idea of mine at that. But since NO ONE has the answer to the topic question, we are allowed to SPECULATE. That is what the fandom does when a series has not been completed

*stage whisper* She's not lying... She WILL get back to you on that. As for her being persistent, I'll use a colorful metaphor. She's like a tick stuck on a dog with dull teeth and no claws. (Excuse me Anniebee for referring to you as a tick. You are nothing like a tick. And using experience from ticks I've seen, you're probably a lot prettier than one.) If you ppl can't guess where I'm from now, I'll be majorly surprised. Especially at all you ppl from the U.S.

We are not off topic at all and I found it.
"And Galbatorix's strength has been increasing each year.... How is that possible? It was a rhetorical question, yet when Oromis remained silent, his almond eyes fixed on a trio of swallows pirouetting overhead, Eragon realized that the elf was considering how best to answer him. The birds chased each other for several minutes. When they flitted from view, Oromis said, "It is not appropriate to have this discussion at the present." "Then you know?" exclaimed Eragon, astonished. "I do. But that information must wait until later in your training. You are not ready for it." Oromis looked at Eragon, as if expecting him to object. I tried going to bed, but this was bugging me, so I decided to look it up. Now I can sleep with a big smile!

So we're on the same time frame, YEY! I know of the phrase because of the westerns I have seen. I have not lived long enough here to otherwise be familiar with it.

I was joking when I had mentioned something on the previous page of this thread that he was getting his strength from the Vault of Souls. After that post, an evening I couldn't sleep, I started browsing through some other Eragon websites, and I've seen the theory placed on them. Could be that I am not that far off, however I'll repeat, this is just speculation and no one will know for certain until the next book comes out.
And about Galbatorix gaining his strength from the people he kills, LOL, that sounds like what Voldemort did to create his Horcruxes in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! Who knows? Anything is possible in the sci-fi genre.
And you are very welcomed. I really enjoy these small challenges!
Death_to_Varden: Maybe he isnt as strong as he says he is, but he does know very strong magic, look at what he taught murtagh
Oh, there is no doubt that he is strong in Black Magic and as you mentioned, Murtagh is an excellent example of this. I am curious though as to why he doesn't leave his castle. Why send other inept minions to do the job if he is so powerful and could have captured Eragon and Saphira himself? Why after the failure of the Urgals, the Raz'zac and Durza didn't he do it himself? Again, if he's that powerful, it would have been a piece of cake for him. It strikes me as so fishy...
What do you guys think?

Yeh i agree..after 200 years of experience and failure u would think he would learn NOT to do stuff himself.

I just think that there is more to it than what meets the eye. Either he has become somewhat complacent, is ill (something like Oromis) or he had too much faith in Murtagh doing the job.

If he were compacent or ill he, dont you think his allies would try to over through him and not be that intimidated

That is an interesting option. Drawing powers from his own people. Galby was alive at the peak and demise of the riders. he knows plenty of spells, oromis refuses to teach eragon too fast which is wise

Hmm..perhaps. But even the weakest can be somewhat feared. Look at all that he has done so far and people have every right to fear him. I think if he were only a little ill, if at that, that it wouldn't drain his powers that much and stuff. I think he would still be the same old wise, and power thirsting fool. And even if he were ill I don't think very many people would try and over throw him immediately...be way too dangerous because I think that he could still do some really powerful and horrible things.
