If a person is the stonger, it means their the stronger of two people. If a person is strongest it means their the strongest of three or more people.

Therefore, in the English language the "est" suffix has to have three things for it to be compared to to be gramatically correct. And unless our dear friend Chris completely ignores the rules of our language, Eragon has another sibling.

To further back up my opinion in the artice on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_%28 ... trilogy%29) is said this, "Paolini has said that it is possible that Eragon may have unknown family members that have not been introduced so far in the series, though he did not confirm this."

Eragon is most likely the youngest of the family, as Selena died too soon after giving birth to him to have another child. But its a toss up to me as to whether Murtagh is a middle child or the eldest, I'd put my money on middle child though.

So, what do you guys think?

There is the slightest chance that Nasuada is his siser, because we don't know her mother. But that's probably not true.

There are a hundred or so theories based on the -est suffix. You're right, but it is never clearly stated that it refers to the eldest of the two families. It could refer to Glaedr being the eldest dragon. Or Murtagh being the eldest sibling. Lots of things are eldest in Eldest.

I think you do have a valid point. I think it's possible but a bit unlikley. though it would be a good twist. A thought : mabey Roran is supossed to be the other brother, because they consider themseleves brothers. And about Eldest standing for the eldest dragon, that could be it but i don't think so, because in that chapter that's when Murhtagh says in the AL that they are brothers, it mentions nothing about Gladear. I think that the title could just be going along with the patern of titles. but who knows...

i'll agree that it's possible that brom is eragons father but i don't think its likely that there is a third sibling. and the title eldest more than likely refers to the fact that murtagh is eragons elder. hence eldest. a quote from the book:
"zar'roc should have gone to morzan's Eldestson not his youngest. it is mine by right of birth."

all the word eldest means is older. and as to the twin thing, eragon was born with garrow. he would have know if he was a twin.

Uhmm... According to your theory (murtagh as a middle child) :

Selena + Mr. X = A third sibling

Selena + Morzan = Murtagh

Selena + Brom = Eragon
